I just wrote a post about this at my site, http://thevirtuousrepublic.com/?p=1986 and listed the values that Republicans must stand for.
Compromising our values has proven to be a failure in 1992, 1995, 2006, and now 2008.
Republicans never get the credit for their massive spending and welfare programs or even their plans to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants.
In my way of thinking, the voters think, “Hey, if the Republicans are willing to give us this much, just imagine what the real thing, the Democrats will give us.”
Being Democrat Lites is just a failed strategy.
Republicans must stand for the following:
* Individuals are guaranteed their liberty by the Creator*
* Limited government is the only form of government compatible with liberty*
* fiscal responsibility guarantees limited government*
* a strong national defense program is the price we pay for our freedom. The application of our military power is to be used judiciously*
* nationalism is a good thing. American values, its Constitution, its guarantee of liberty and personal freedom are unique in this world and are worth protecting.*
* The promotion of virtue is an important function of government.
* The free market goes hand in hand with liberty.
* energy independence is a national priority.
And those with an asterisk behind them are required to be admitted to the party. The last three, while not mandatory, will be given equal consideration and time.
