What a waste of the American president’s time, energy and aircraft fuel for him to fly over Kentucky for a phot op. He is a bigger and better man than that. He did what was important, declared an emergency so federal funds could immediatelly flow the the affected area. That is what he should have done and that’s exactly what he did.

Gee, I wonder, did you say the same thing about Bush during Katrina? I doubt it.

The current fema responce to the ice storm that devestated a swath from arkansas through penn. is about the usual. I also stongly agree with the writer who suggested local responce teams. I am a paramedic working in Clinton Ar. I was on duty during the 2 tornados last year in feb. and may. The fema responce was pathetic; standing in the road passing out leaflets on who to call for help, and this was 5 days after the first one in feb. They only got in the way of all our county “volunteers” busy with : welfare checks,clothing/food distribution,cleanup of debris,ect,ect.
We don’t need the feds! we did just fine down here by ourselves. So well in fact that the whole scenario has been an inspiration for our entire community!
The “fed involvement” will only end when we all cease to finance the “monster” any longer… and now the bailout with the obscene bonuses…if we don’t finance them with our tax dollars, they’re out of business.

That’s a great idea. The main point of this, is how Obama is getting kid glove treatment by the media. Not the storm in KY or FEMA’s handling of it.

We had massive ice storms in SW Missouri the last two years in a row. I was out of power for 11 days(2007) the first year and 4 days the next(2008).

It was a disaster but we never received any real support. That is why we need Committees of Safety( http://www.committeesofsafety.org ) formed in every State and Local area to setup Local response capabilities. We don’t need the Federal Govt. or their bogus agency called FEMA. It is impossible for the Feds and FEMA to effectively respond. It is up to the Local people.

When will people learn NOT TO RELY ON GOVERNMENT! If people were prepared they wouldn’t be in this situation. We need to learn that the government is not our parent or protector. We are responsible for our own lives.

I would personally like to see FEMA go away. Citizens can do just fine coordinating with their neighbors and city councils to get through tough times.
