One other thing, Imee. Why should the CEO let the public think that the stimulus will allow Caterpillar to recall laid off workers when he knows he has no intention of doing so?

Imee, why expect the CEO to stay silent? The president is telling Caterpillar what will be good for it. Not speaking up would have implied the Cat CEO’s agreement. The company has a public face, and needs its own views owned . . . speaking privately to the president would not have accomplished that.
