It is my feeling, and it has been for a couple of years, that the disastrous political and policy consequences of the Bush administration create -- or at least, <i>should</i> create -- an opportunity to mend some fences within the conservative movement. Given the current hegemony of the Democrats in Washington, a continuation of the vicious infighting between libertarians and traditionalists, between neos and paleos, etc., makes sense only to those who want to live under a permanent "progressive" majority. Exactly what the terms of rapprochement would be, I don't know, but the kind of factionalism that might have been permissible during the 25-year era of Republican dominance (1981-2006) has passed its sell-by date.
