At President Obama’s meeting with the heads of South American countries this morning, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez stood, walked over to him, and presented him with a copy of “Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent” by Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano.
Obama politely posed for a photograph with Chavez, shook his hand, and accepted the gift.
The book, first published in Spanish in 1971, offers a critique of the consequences of 500 years of European and U.S. colonization of Latin America.
More Hope and Change? (and Communism?)
Galeano writes that while the era of “lodes of gold” and “mountains of silver” has passed, “our region still works as a menial laborer. It continues to exist at the service of others’ needs, as a source of oil and iron, of copper and meat, of fruit and coffee, the raw materials and foods destined for rich countries which profit more from consuming them than Latin America does from producing them.”
At another point in the book, Galeano writes: “Our defeat was always implicit in the victory of others; our wealth has always generated our poverty by nourishing the prosperity of others.”
The book also criticizes the U.S. for “spreading and imposing family planning. … In Latin America it is more hygienic and effective to kill future guerillas in the womb that in the mountains or the streets.
First he shakes hands with this idiot and now he gets a book from a Communist, that basically insults America and our values system, and basically capitalism in general; and he takes it and smiles. The book, from what I have read is basically a book full of Anti American sentiment and is filled with marxist rantings. In fact, the book, when it was first published, was banned in Uruguay and Chile. What does that tell you?
I tell ya folks, this President is going to give we Conservatives material to write with for many years to come. That is, if Obama and his marxist do not shut down blogs altogether for fear of his Administration being criticized.
Obama thinks he can charm the world & they won’t notice what he’s doing. It seems like the Republicans & Democrats are playing good cop/bad cop. The Rs take on the role of bad cop & wear the aggressive face. Then the Ds come along playing good cop & wear the smiley face. All the while continuing most of the same policies of the Rs. Some change.

If I were a Neo-Con, as I was accused of being (see comments) by some troll I just banned. I would be angered by this comment.
However, I will be the first to admit, that because of our interventionist foreign policy, we have angered many people across the world.
Now as far as the book is concerned, the book is actually quite Marxist in nature and rails against capitalism. Do you agree with that sort of mentality? I would assume not, seeing that your a libertarian. Further, my question is, that if Latin America is so angry with North America for using it’s resources, then why did they sign contracts allowing us to get those resources?
I’m not trying to pick a fight here Rocky, I’m simply trying to make a point, that lefty Marxists like that idiot Chevez, hate America, for it’s love of freedom and Capitalism.

They don’t hate us because we’re capitalists or because we are “free.” They hate us because we have stood aside as our corrupt government has behaved like a pack of bullies for decades. The people of these countries have not signed those contracts; they were signed by another pack of bullies, their “leaders,” often empowered and put in place by our own bullies and psychopaths. I don’t care about lefties and righties; I care about human individual liberty: the right to be free from the depredations of bullies and snoops, the right to be left the hell alone. I was born in America. I’m still here. Where is America now? The Statue of Liberty was last seen wading toward the Benelux Countries. Her plinth is now occupied by the Statue of Voluntary Compliance.
Rocky, you might be amazed to find this out. But I wholeheartedly agree. This is why I voted for Bob Barr, and not for Obama or McCain. I voted my convictions. Not for the personality or the supposed “War Hero”.

As an American who happily pledged my commitment to the Constitution when I voluntarily joined the Army, I could not have voted for either of those Statist traitors. Unfortunately, I couldn’t vote for Barr either, even as a protest, since Oklahoma chose to disenfranchise me with its impossible 3rd party voting rules. My candidate was Ron Paul and still is. I strongly disagree with some of Ron’s issues, but I knew he would honor the Oath of Office, just as I knew that neither McCain nor Obama would. If we are a nation of laws, let Obama allow full disclosure of his credentials. I’m beginning to suspect he is a “Manchurian Candidate.”

I very much agree with this here. I cannot believe that more Conservatives have not raised this issue more. Mainly, I believe it’s because the Neo-Cons are so chummy with Democrats, seeing that they are former fascists themselves. Obama is very much a public figure, so, let him release his birth certificate; and not that forgery copy, that he floated to the sheep media and public. Although, I have not signed totally on to the Manchurian Candidate” idea just yet; I believe Obama should be be more upfront.
I also agree with the Oath of office. Obama has done nothing but ruin our nations founding principles; All in the name of social justice.
It’s a terrible shame. But it is what the American people voted for.
