I hate to admit it, but I agree. It was reported that Christian Military officers were handing out Christian trinkets in Iraq; which I felt was wrong.

Religion and Military do not mix and this is a tragic example of this.

I think it is interesting that the military and other government agencies have not been pressured to abide by the First Amendment provision for the Separation of Church and State. In these areas especially it is important not to let emotional attachments or religious beliefs interfere with the safety of our country's citizens.

The simple act of allowing any religion to be encouraged puts us all at risk.

As for this gunman's mental state, they do say that suicide rates for psychiatrists are higher than average, so I wonder how surprised the military can truly be by this horrific incident...

The recipe for disaster was always there. Take a bunch of young males with weapons, sprinkle conservatively with religious friction. Heat on high flame with a person who has the career profile for a high suicide rate and you get-tragedy.

Next we will hear a lot of noise about withdrawing the troops. We will also hear a lot of noise about Ft. Hood's culpability in this matter, the FBI's attempts to perform damage control and the Army's attempts to cover their backsides. We might even hear about the irony of this shooter's specializing in preventive psychiatry.

But we will not hear any more about the wisdom, or lack of it, of our people and thus our government allowing religion and even encouraging it--in its own military.
