Words have objective meanings. Dan as a professional journalist should know this. Also the use of the term "Watermelon" to degrade people of color pre-dates the internet by at least 20 years, as a youth in the 60's I remember hearing this as an insult even then. FINALLY, some justice! Monica Conyers is the most outrageous, embarrassingly crooked and egotistical person we have had in Detroit government since...well, since Kwame Kilpatrick. Actually, five years would have been more fair, considering the "middle man" Rayford Jackson got sentenced to five years. (Neither of them cooperated with authorities). And, yes, trying to use her children as an excuse to not go to prison is ludicrous! I can't believe Steve Fishman, her lawyer, even tried to use that ridiculouis point. Do you realize how many women in prison have children on the outside? I don't believe Monica deserves any more consideration than they got- or get. And from what I hear, her behavior in Court just cements even more that this woman has no shame, nor any humility.
